CEMS Rapid Mapping Explorer

Challenge: The CEMS Risk and Recovery Mapping OpenAPI Specifications share emergency disaster data across many separate activations, areas of interest, and file versions. This raw data needs to be organized into a structured database so it can be quickly explored on the web.
Solution: Built an independent pipeline that automatically fetches live CEMS emergency feeds and stores them neatly in PostGIS. The data is published as fast vector tiles through GeoServer and GeoWebCache, allowing users to smoothly explore disaster boundaries and affected zones in an interactive OpenLayers map.

Crisis Access: Exposure Analysis

Django PostGIS PostGIS MVT OpenLayers SDSS
Role: Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) designed to help emergency planners evaluate disaster impact.
Challenge: During active disasters, responders need immediate answers on which roads, buildings, and land areas are directly in harm's way.
Solution: Overlays hazard zones (such as floods or fires) against base map infrastructure directly in PostGIS. The system quickly calculates exposure numbers (affected kilometers of road, building counts, hectares of land) and renders the results on an OpenLayers map using lightweight vector tiles.

Vector Tile Discovery & API Endpoints

Django PostGIS GeoServer MVT API Endpoints Local Disk Cache
Role: An API and discovery catalog to document and access vector tile endpoints.
Challenge: Developers and client applications often need an easy way to discover available tile endpoints without downloading massive GeoJSON files that slow down web browsers.
Solution: Created clear API endpoints that document and serve available vector tile URLs. Provides two flexible delivery routes: GeoServer Mapbox Vector Tiles (MVT) backed by GeoWebCache, as well as direct PostGIS MVT generation stored in a local on-disk cache for fast, direct client access without extra overhead.
