Reason
29/07/2025 at approximately 13:24 (CEST), a wildfire started near the village of Kria Vrisi, 35 Km southeast from Rethimno city, in Crete Island (South Greece). The fire expanded rapidly due to high northerly winds. Residents of Sahtoura, Melambes, Orne, Agia Galini and many other villages had to be evacuated, and a 112 cell-broadcasting message was sent for this purpose. Ground forces (104 vehicles with 313 firefighters) and aerial means (3 helicopters and 4 airplanes) were used for fire suppression, assisted by municipality vehicles/machinery and volunteer organizations. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping is requested to provide initial rough estimation, fire extent and damage assessment emergency mapping.
